The Olympic Torch and it's journey through Bedale & North Yorkshire

Posted on

There's been lots of articles in the local newspapers lately about the 2012 Olympics. Now that we're at the start of 2012, the team at BedaleOnline thought we'd enter into the Olympic spirit and blog about the Olympic flame and what we can look forward to..

The Olympic Torch will travel via 20 towns and villages throughout North Yorkshire in June 2012; passing through Bedale on June 20th. We can't help thinking that this will be a fantastic way to bring the community together to celebrate and will also put the spotlight on our fabulous market town as the torch passes through from Aiskew to Aysgarth before continuing it's journey around the UK!

According to "The Olympic Flame will come within 10 miles of 95% of people in the UK, Isle of Man, Guernsey and Jersey. It will enable local communities to shine a light on the best their area has to offer – including celebrations of local culture, breathtaking landscapes and dynamic urban areas."

The Olympic Torch Relay will start on the 19th May at Land’s End, Cornwall and will end 70 days later at the Olympic Stadium after travelling approximately 8,000 miles around the UK; carried by 8,000 torch bearers and covering more than 1,000 villages, town and cities!

The Olympic torch will be travelling on the following journey throughout North Yorkshire:

18th June 2012
Hindewell, Lythe, Sandsend, Whitby, Pickering, Scarborough, Filey, Bridlington, Beverley & Hull (For an overnight stop)

19th June 2012
Hull to: Brough, Goole, Camblesforth, Selby, Monk Fryston, Barkston Ash, Tadcaster, Boston Spa, Wetherby, Harewood, Knaresborough, Harrogate, Ripon & York (For an overnight stop)

20th June 2012
York to: Thirsk, Northallerton, Aiskew, Bedale, Aysgarth, Leyburn & Richmond

While in North Yorkshire, the torch will be travelling on some of our county's best transport! On the 18th June, the torch will travel on the North Yorkshire Moors Railway from Whitby to Pickering and on the 20th June will board the Flying Scotsman which is owned by The National Railway Museum, while travelling from York to Thirsk.

The Olympic Torch's key focus will be on communities and young people; passing a number of schools and even making some lunchtime stops; with the aim of getting children inspired and therefore more involved in sports.

At BedaleOnline we can't wait to hear more about what everyone has planned for the Olympic Torch's journey through our community!

Extra publicity for Bedale can only be a good thing and we look forward to promoting our beautiful market town and showing what Bedale has to offer while the torch passes through!

Do you know the route the torch is travelling from Bedale to Aysgarth? Are they using the A684 or using the back roads? Looking at the offical map they have just drawn a straight line between to the two places i.e. over fields and through woods!! ------------------------ Hi Jane, thank you for your enquiry! Yes we noticed that too! I'm afraid we don't know any more than you though. Can anybody help? Let us know! BedaleOnline

Hi. Do you know who are the torch bearers when travelling through Bedale? Are there any events my daughter could get involved in? She is six and it will be her birthday that day and wanted to help get envolved in some way. Any info will be appreciated. Thank you. Sarah --------------------------------- Hi Sarah, I'm really sorry but we're not sure. You could contact the Town Council who may know more? Thanks, BedaleOnline
